The (s)Mother Jacket evolved out of the Hug Pillow and the Hug Machine. Melanie Klein, whose psychoanalytic observations resulted in the Good and Bad Breast concept i.e. the object which provided succour and the object which didnt in a healthy child this split of good and bad is integrated into one person, the child can then manage ambivalence and see that people can be good and bad. I wanted to create a good and bad object. To have something that would be activated by performance, combining ridiculousness, restraint, discomfort and comfort, smothering and softness.

The jacket is made of canvas stiffened with buckram, with adjustable straps and buckles. Inside the plush fabric is stuffed to bursting in a shape that can be interpreted as breasts or buttocks. There will be performances with the jacket throughout the Private View, Friday evening and all day Saturday for the Final Show.

The film                       about puppets having a very realistic sexual encounter and Emma Hauck's 'Husband' made during her incarceration in an asylum both influenced the making of this piece.
